Mauna Lani enjoys a storied golf history, and all 36 holes are a fitting tribute to Francis I'i Brown. Known for its lava bed terrain dotted by kiawe trees, the North Course offers the quintessential Hawaii golf experience. The South Course, with its stark a'a lava setting, presents a challenging layout with holes set before mountain and ocean views, including #15, one of the world's most photographed over-the-ocean holes. More than anything, they are places of connection, where moms, dads, sisters and brothers can grow closer with every drive, chip and putt. Since opening in 1981, the Mauna Lani Courses have collected numerous "Best Courses You Can Play" awards from Golfweek, Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine, and they were a 10-year host venue of the Senior Skins Game, hosting many of golf's greats, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Gary Player.
Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is a large, 62 acre park with a sandy beach on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hapuna (meaning "spring" or "pool" in Hawaiian) is popular with residents and visitors. This is one of the few white sand beaches on the west coast of the Big Island. The others include Kua Bay (Manini'owali Beach), Kauna'oa Bay, known as Mauna Kea Beach, and Samuel M. Spencer Beach Park. It was named the Best Beach in America by Florida International University professor Stephen Leatherman, known as "Dr Beach", in 1993 and 2021. Hapuna beach has lifeguards, but can be hazardous during high surf conditions since the beach is not protected from the open ocean. The park has free admission for Hawaii residents and $5 for visitors, paved parking, pavilions, picnic areas, restrooms, and showers. Camping permits are available.
Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site is a United States National Historic Site located on the northwestern coast of the island of Hawaii. The site preserves the National Historic Landmark ruins of the last major Ancient Hawaiian temple, and other historic sites. A visitor center operated by the National Park Service is located at the site. An interpretive trail begins at the visitor center and leads to Pu'ukohola. Just offshore is Hale o Kapuni, an underwater structure dedicated to sharks. A pohaku (stone post) marks a spot where the feeding of the sharks can be viewed. Across the bay is the modern Kawaihae harbor.
Kohala has two small airports. Upolu Airport is on Upolu Point at the northern tip of the island. Waimea-Kohala Airport is south of the town of Waimea, Hawaii County, Hawaii.
Whether it's a family vacation, golf trip or restful reunion, we encourage you to enjoy the best Hawaii has to offer.
