Welcome to our Treehouse at Hakalau! The only way to stay closer to the ocean would be in a boat. Sit back and watch the cruise ships slowly pass by knowing that the passengers aboard are truly envying your incredible accommodations. This quaint and unassuming second story home offers a nearly 180 degree view of the mighty Pacific ocean where you can relax and watch whales as they suddenly breach the blue water, spinner dolphins playfully chase a passing fishing vessel and the rising sun as it welcomes you to an amazing array of morning colors.

Immediately as you enter the home your attention is drawn to the vast ocean front windows and sliding glass doors that lead out to the huge deck. Here you can spend endless hours enjoying the cool breezes from the ocean, sipping on a morning cup of coffee or watching spinner dolphins and whales playfully swim by. During whale season, there may even be nights when you can hear the whales singing. The windows have blackout curtains to shade the interior and cool the house during peak sunshine hours.

The home features hardwood flooring and is well furnished with two spacious bedrooms. Both bedrooms offer comfortable queen beds and a nice size closet to store your belongings. The kitchen is immediately off of the living area with equally incredible ocean views. The kitchen comes furnished with a built-in range, full size refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster as well as pots, pans, dishes and other cooking utensils. The bathroom contains a large tub/shower combination, toilet, and spacious vanity. The ample windows in this home do a great job of allowing the comfortable trade breezes to flow throughout the home. Like the majority of homes in Hawai'i, we do not have air conditioning. We maintain a simple mindset in that when we get hot we open the windows and turn on the fan. When we get cold, we close the windows and put on socks :)

We are near Highway 19, 15 minutes to Hilo and only 20 minutes to the Airport.

Hilo is known for its warm aloha spirit, relaxed lifestyle, unique shops, art galleries and restaurants with local regional cuisine. Local attractions include Lyman Museum, East Hawaii Cultural Center, historic Palace Theatre, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Imiloa Astronomy Center, UH Hilo Performing Arts Center and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Hilo Farmer's Market is a favorite for fresh, local produce. Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo's premier hula competition and cultural event, is held annually. Hilo's black sand beaches are some of the best for snorkeling, diving, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming with turtles and tropical fish, or watching the whales off shore. Take a helicopter volcano tour or short scenic drive to active Kilauea volcano to view a lava flow, ride horses in Waipio Valley or tour the summit and view the night skies of Mauna Kea.

6. CANCELLATION POLICY (not applicable to Hale Kai Suites. See section f, below): To offer you the best services possible, we strictly adhere to our cancellation policy. Guest shall inform Agent in writing of Guest’s intention to cancel the reservation. (For reservations made through third parties, additional cancellation policies may apply.) The cancellation policy is as follows:
a. If Cancellation notice is received thirty or more days (30+) prior to the check-in date, a cancellation fee of $75.00 will be retained and the balance will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
b. If Cancellation notice is received less than thirty days but at least fifteen days (15-29) prior to the check-in date, fifty percent (50%) of the booking amount of rent and taxes will be forfeited. Half of the rent, tax, security deposit or damage waiver and any pre-collected cleaning fees will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
c. NO REFUNDS if cancelled within 14 days of arrival (0 – 14). As a courtesy to our Guest, if Agent can rebook any portion of the canceled reservation, Guest will be refunded to the extent that Agent is able to re-book the Property.
d. This loss can be avoided if Travel Protection Insurance was purchased and the reason for cancelation is covered under the travel insurance policy. All reservation changes must be acknowledged in writing.
e. Owner/Agent Cancellation Policy: In the unlikely event that the Property becomes unavailable for any part of the tenancy for reasons beyond the control of the Agent, including but not limited to the sale of the property, Owner and/or Agent may cancel this Agreement and refund in full to the Guest all payments made. Agent will assist in procuring similar alternative accommodation should this situation arise. Guest agrees that any claims against Owner/Agent arising out of performance or
non-performance under this agreement shall be limited to a full refund of all consideration previously tendered by Guest.
f. Hale Kai Suites Cancellation Policy: The guest may cancel free of charge up to 14 days prior to arrival. The guest will be charged 50% of the total price if they cancel in the 14 days before arrival. No $75 cancellation fee charged on Hale Kai Suites cancellations.

"Lovely home - Photos don't do it justice
We loved our time at this home! It looked nice in the photos, but when we opened the door we were surprised at how much better it looks in person! We spent hours relaxing on that deck, sunbathing and watching the ocean. The view never gets old! We worried a little about no AC, but it wasn't a problem. Plenty of air flow, ocean breeze, temps were very moderate. We texted the on-island contact with a question and got a quick response. The place was super clean and had everything we needed. 20 minutes to Hilo, a little over an hour to great beaches. Would definitely stay again! "

"Amazing View of the Ocean!
We thoroughly enjoyed all five days! We spent the majority of our time on the back deck watching the waves, looking for whales (we saw plenty), and listening to the breakers crash into the cliffs below us. We had all our
meals outside. If you’re outdoorsy, there’s a ton to do within a short drive.
The house was clean and had everything we needed. The property as a whole is beautiful. There’s jungle to the right of property where we saw pigs and a lot of gorgeous birds. It’s simply an amazing property!

The only noteworthy concern we have is that the owner’s main house is also a rental. The owners were there the first days of our stay, but we rarely saw them (nice people!). A family of four showed up at the end of our stay. They rarely came outside and were off the grounds much of the time. We were thankful that we hardly saw them. Had they been outside often, played in the large lawn, were loud, etc., our experience would not have been as enjoyable. Our deck was high, so we could look down on everything they did including on their patio and inside their house. Our concern isn’t that two families can be on the grounds, it’s that it wasn’t clear enough in the advertisements and that’s something we feel should be exceptionally clear due to the lack of privacy both parties have.

As noted, we had a fantastic stay! Kekela, our contact at Salt Water was exceptionally pleasant to work with and was proactive in making sure all our needs were met.

"Treehouse
The treehouse stay was overall a pleasant experience.
Was only able to enjoy the lanai and view one day as it rained the others. Could you please control the weather next time. Found a nice gecko in the living room. Put him outside. Check the front gate as it did not close completely. Dave"

"Beautiful and relaxing
We had a great stay at the Treehouse it was as beautiful in person as it is in the photos. The sunrises were spectacular, the sounds of the ocean waves were relaxing while sitting on the deck.
The kitchen was stocked with everything you would need. But the restaurants in Hilo are pretty good. "

"The Treehouse was AMAZING!
The magic started when we drove thru the security gate. The grounds are amazingly manicured and lovely. Walking into the Treehouse was breathtaking as we looked at the ocean. The green Anoles were there to greet us and the birds serenaded us all day. The kitchen was well supplied with essentials for cooking (the blender doubled as a coffee grinder quite nicely). The privacy and quiet area provided very restful sleep and a very relaxed atmosphere. We look forward to another stay in the future. "

"Oceanview Sunrises are the Best
We enjoyed our stay at the Treehouse, how could we not with that view! The accommodations meet all our needs for a peaceful relaxing time. It has comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen. We watched the cruise ships pass by and enjoyed our morning coffee on the deck. It is located close enough to Hilo for shopping and dining options, but far enough away to escape city traffic and bustle. Excellent customer service from start to finish. We will look at Salt Water Vacations before booking with another property management company. We look forward to staying here again. Mahalo. "

"Beautiful, secluded spot with an incredible view!
I loved making my coffee in the well equipped kitchen and heading out onto the deck to take in the expansive ocean view. It's just far enough from Hilo to feel peaceful, but close enough to give you access to restaurants and activities. Loved the quiet Hakalau beach Park (walking distance) for swimming in a protected fresh pool and walking in the ocean surf. "

"You can't get a better view of the ocean!
Wee loved our time at The Treehouse! Unfortunately, we came during a wet few days, so didn't get to see much sunshine from the deck, but it didn't stop up from enjoying the stunning landscape. We enjoyed coffee on the large deck each morning, and loved listening to the birds and ocean waves at night. The home needs a little updating, but the new owners have clearly stated this is in the works. We were very comfortable here, and while we didn't get to see any whales or dolphins swimming past, we loved being able to sit outside, watch the ocean, listen to the waves crashing, and just rest. It was a perfect spot, and I would stay here again I'm a heartbeat! "

"Not snowing here
Nice getaway from the snow and cold temps in WA. Rained a lot but the sun managed to find its way to the deck. The yard was beautiful, loved the wild baby pigs scampering from lot to lot, the roosters and a few mongoose sightings. Treehouse was as advertised and pictured, height gave a view of waves crashing in the cove to the south."
