Nearby Activities in Waikoloa

When you rent a beach house or condo in Waikoloa, located on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island, you can enjoy tropical weather year-round and there will always be plenty of ways to explore the area. The best time of year to book an oceanfront home is from late May to early October, particularly for warm weather activities. Waikoloa is primarily a resort destination but has one fun fact that makes it genuinely Hawaiian; the village was built on top of a lava field! A towering volcano sits just 30 miles from the village, called Mauna Kea. While the volcano is currently dormant, its eruptions created a path to the ocean.

Things To Do in Waikoloa

Most Fun Things to Do in Waikoloa: Visit the Unique 49 Black Sand Beach - Unlike many other beaches in the area, 49 Black Sand Beach is true to its name with black sand covering its shores, a result of fine grains of lava. This provides a stark contrast to the clear blue water. When the ocean is calm, go snorkeling and take a look at tropical fish, tidepools, and underwater rock formations. "Good spot to explore the Kona side of the Big Island
We really enjoyed getting to know the Waikoloa Village part of the Big Island, and we were really comfy at Ahe Waikoloa Hills unit.

I wouldn't have guessed that being so close to the little shopping center would be a good thing. But the building is well-insulated so we never noticed traffic noise. It was so convenient to dash across the street to get groceries, water, ice cream, Mexican food. No worries with lists, just go if you need something.

I am a birder, and enjoyed learning about a few species that have taken up residence in the area: wild turkeys (not very wild), chestnut-bellied sand grouse, rosy-faced lovebirds, and others. A short drive up the mountain to Waiki'i I saw Pueo, Hawaii's native owl.

The climate was pleasantly cool at night, breezy in the day.

It was fun to be 20 minutes' drive from Waimea, where the misty weather was typically 15 degrees colder. Or, 20 minutes' drive from the beach, or 35 minutes from shopping in Kona town.

The finishes in the unit are new, it has a nice kitchen with everything you need.

I did have to work with Saltwater to fix a water leak in the beginning of our stay. They worked hard to get the plumbers in and out of our hair.
The only complaint I had was the entryway carpet needed to be shampooed -- nothing uncomfortable, but noticeable.

I only used the pool one time, but saw families taking their kids there, looked fun. We would take our evening stroll across the road in the golf course neighborhood, saw some beautiful red sunsets with the ocean in the distance.

"Perfect Family Rental
Aloha!!!

If you’re visiting Big Island, this unit is wonderful! We stayed for two weeks and were very comfortable— it’s a great home base after a day of adventures. It’s within 15 minutes of the nicest beaches on Big Island (go to Mauna Kea early in the morning or late afternoon— it’s beautiful); 25 minutes to Waimea, where there are wonderful parks and Farmers Markets; 45 minutes to Waipi’o Fruit Shack and Hanukaa (spelling?) Historic Town; 15 minutes to The King’s Shops, where you can find a children’s museum, and The Queen’s Shops for general walking and shopping. Also, if you want to visit Hilo, you can either drive along the coast through Kona or through a beautiful forest over the mountain— they’re both gorgeous, but I enjoyed the minimal traffic over the mountain.

The unit has a great space and separation of rooms. Everyone was comfortable. It has a very well stocked kitchen (including a coffee grinder, rice cooker and basic oils/seasoning) for meal preparation and dining and a comfortable lanai to enjoy coffee. Beach chairs, coolers, body boards, an umbrella and beach towels were provided and much appreciated! Also basic cleaning supplies for comfort. Off street parking without a daily charge was nice.

A grocery store and strip mall are right across the street and a new shopping plaza was taking form, all within walking distance. Very nice neighbors and an overall feeling of safety.

The property management is available, but not invasive or overbearing. The owner even purchased a travel crib for our baby!

We really enjoyed our time here. This is a perfect spot for Big Island visits. The ONLY downside of this location is that the sunset/sunrise views are partially blocked. You can see sunsets from the lanai, but you can get better ones by driving out of the village.

We would absolutely stay here again!

"Family reunion
Waikoloa hills unit 1201 is a comfortable place for anyone interested in the west side of the Big Island. My family was returning for a reunion and we wanted a place closer to golf and amenities for the family. It's about thirty minutes from the airport in Kona and just uphill from the beaches and resorts of Waikoloa. The unit has a nice kitchen with everything needed to cook meals and relax. Upstairs are the two bedrooms and the master has an en suite bathroom, so no sharing bathroom with my kids, lol. Right across the street is the village that has groceries, gas restaurants.Golf with my buddies was an easy walk from the unit which enabled my family to go and explore with the vehicle. The place is absolutely worth checking out and we will be back to create more awesome memories.
Aloha"

"Relaxed family time
The condo was the perfect size for our family of 4. This can be a group of friends etc as well. In the morning you can hear birds singing, wild turkey birds are rooming outside the condo. Our kids enjoyed seeing the big turkey birds. You can take a morning walk towards the golf course or shopping complex across the street to have a coffee or breakfast. KTA supermarket has all you need from fresh local vegetables, fruits to beach accessories. This condo had every necessity in the kitchen, washer, dryer in the unit, beach gear, you can drive 10 min to the beaches. We used a BBQ grill by the pool and enjoyed the cool sunset breath. We all had a nice time here.
For Japanese guests - I am originally from Japan and the rental company who is managing the unit is a couple and the wife is from Japan. We inquired about something and she helped me in Japanese. It was very nice. 日本の方へ、

"Our 2024 vacation
We had a wonderful experience on the big island and this well appointed home didn’t disappoint. Our family of four enjoyed the open yet comfortable space. The supermarket and shopping across the street was super convenient. The pools and additional amenities made for many different activities available at our fingertips. My youngest got to experience her first time in the ocean was probably the highlight of the trip and a close second would be walking to the golf course from this place! Definitely worth it and will return!"

"Nice Condo in a Great Location
My family loved our time at Ahe Waikoloa. The condo is just like the photos; beautiful, nicely furnished, and very comfortable. It's right next to the golf course. I was able to play one day while my wife and kids had fun hanging out at the pool. We spent a day at Hapuna Beach which is a GORGEOUS white sandy beach. It was about a 20 minute drive. We had dinner at Lava Lava Beach Club, super yummy! And watched the sunset. Highly recommend, and will definitely stay again next year! "
