Nearby Activities in Pahoa

For eco-friendly, adventure travelers, romantics and those wanting to 'get away' Pahoa is a PERFECT vacation spot to rent a beach house in a lush Hawaiian jungle, but only a few blocks to the beach! Pahoa is located in the Big Island's Puna District. It is also known as the Big Island's hippie capital, a place where New Agers, hippies and others living an alternative lifestyle reside. Where else would you expect to find a nude beach?

Things To Do in Pahoa

Fun Things to Do in Pahoa: The pride of "downtown" Pahoa is its raised wooden sidewalk, the false-front stores and the numerous old buildings, which give it a "Wild West" atmosphere. In fact, Pahoa has the highest concentration of old buildings in Hawaii. There are a few small restaurants with a variety of cuisines, craft stores, galleries, boutiques and the island's oldest movie theater. The Pahoa Marketplace, which is located at the edge of town, has more shops, but is not as scenic as .. read more

"In the heart of nature
We are city dwellers from Germany and really enjoyed being close to nature. We felt like we were sleeping in the jungle, the noises of the animals at night were so loud, but we found it very calming. The house lacked nothing. The only negative thing is that you have to put up with a very long journey. But we knew that beforehand."

"Mahalo Hale Ohai
Thank you, Saltwater Vacation Rentals for being a good host and providing a wonderful place to stay along the Puna Coast on Big Island in Hawaii. They were most helpful and accommodating in our communications. Hale Ohai is fabulous in modern design and beautifully landscaped. It was very clean and neat upon arrival. It has a very well equipped full-size modern kitchen. We loved the open air feeling of the living spaces. The jungle sounds outside at night were intense but natural.

While the location is quite distant from the Hawaii Volcanos National Park and Hilo, it is only about a 20-minute drive to Pahoa for shops and restaurants. But the location is great for black sand beaches and more recent lava flows exploration.

We would happily use Hale Ohai again when visiting the SE part of the Big Island. Highly recommended for those seeking modern design, comfort and amenities within a rural setting. Cheers....

"Disappointed
I loved the look and feel of this place and was looking forward to staying here. My disappointment comes in two areas. 1) they could be more generous! The coffee was instant (not ground), there was not enough soap or shampoo for us. There was just one nightlight in each room for reading. 2) several things were broken. The coffee maker couldn't be programmed. The dishwasher didn’t work at all. The shower head fell off its mount multiple times. The light switch cover in the bedroom was covered with black tape. A pyrex dish was shattered in the drawer. Last, the hot water didn’t work at all for our first 20 hours. No apologies from the property manager. I had to keep checking and asking. We were cold and wet after a trip to the volcano and arrived during a big rain storm. Had to wait until
after2 pm the next day. I had to ask. They weren’t proactive in telling me when it would be fixed or that it had been. "

"A very nice stay
A very nice experience and a different view of Big Island.
The open design gives a good impression of the surroundings, unfortunately the sounds of frogs, insects etc can also be heard at night.
But overall a very great time."

"Terrific!
Beautiful home in a fabulous off the beaten path neighborhood. The modern architecture fits perfectly in the gorgeous jungle setting and the open air concept is very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped, only lacking an outdoor gas grill. Overall, a great spot to escape the daily grind."

"Beautiful property for a quiet getaway!
We had a fantastic stay! The unique design and modern amenities made this a very fun place to stay. The home is stocked with games, yoga mats and everything you need in the kitchen for cooking. The beach is walking distance from the house. We enjoyed the open air concept upstairs and the privacy of the downstairs bedrooms. The house has a lot of character, seating options both inside and outside and is very comfortable. We'd definitely stay here again."

"Great place!
This was such a nice place to stay! The house has a nice open concept where you feel like you are outside but still protected by the big screens. The kitchen is well stocked. It is a cool area to check out, the hit ponds are great and the market was fun!

"Lovely Hale ‘Ohai❣️
This house fulfilled a spot on my bucket list that I didn’t even know was there. The home is so uniquely placed on the land , architecturally smart with clean lines, bright & airy, utilized space so well, organized in all places, and artistically rich...simply elegant!!!! Then there’s the monkey pod trees and all the other variety of trees & plants. What a pleasure, it was hard to venture out because we just wanted to STAY! Oh , did I mention the great bedroom & bathroom ideas with the best outdoor showers!!! Also appreciated the special wood furniture and wood island & outside table! Hawaii was represented well❤️! "

"Perfect blend of off-grid & luxury
A memorable, enjoyable stay in what feels like a treehouse amongst the monkey pod trees. Very well maintained property. Very accurately described in the previous reviews. Wonderful communication/response time from host agency. Note: The 2 bedrooms are very intimate with each other- luckily the nighttime chorus of coqui frogs helps a bit with “sound privacy”☺️.
Would recommend highly to other adventurers who are seeking a non- touristy visit to the Big Island. Tip: you’ll likely be driving a lot to take advantage of all the big island has to offer, so invest in a comfortable rental car/suv. "

"Above expectations
My husband and I with two children stayed here and it was perfect!! I would not recommend with small children, the stairs are steep. Forest was noisy but didn’t bother us at all. In fact, we enjoyed it. I can’t explain how tranquil and calming this home is!! This is my dream home, a mixture of modern design and Nature. Had all pots, pans, plates, coffee maker, tea pot, toaster , etc. Will definitely stay here again!!!"

"Peaceful Hawaiian escape
We had a lovely time in this remote getaway. The kitchen was well equipped, the setting beautiful, and the architecture interesting. "

"Top hideaway in a splendid architectured home
Very good price performance in a very clean and comfortable home with nice outdoor showers, complete kitchen equipment and perfect mattresses!
What you should know: The two bedroooms are very nearby, the birds playing a nightround concert, the location is quite away from the next stores e.g.
Beside of this is was one of our best stays in a 3-week round trip to different hawaiian islands.
Don't miss the hidden black sand beach nearby!"

"K Beach Treasure
This was our second stay and it was even better than the first. The house is perfectly outfitted for a great stay at Kehena Beach. Our only disappointment was that we didn't stay longer. Hopefully we will be back next year."

"Pahoa Stay
This was a magical place! We absolutely loved the open air concept of the inside of the home, and enjoyed the sun out on the beautiful deck in the afternoons. The outdoor showers were such a treat as well, with one getting incredible morning sun. Shawna was so responsive and communicative, thank you! We will be back!"

"Unique experience
If you’ve ever wanted to live in a beautiful home in a tropical botanical garden with adorable emerald green gecko friends (and who hasn’t?) then this is your dream home.

Very comfortable and well stocked. The lack of AC was not a problem at all. It feels remote but is 20 minutes to an excellent grocery store and restaurants.

Because the living room is only screens, you may hear your neighbor’s muted conversation during the day. At night, the frogs are loud, however, we slept well with the doors closed and the windows open.

We would stay again."

"Unique and awesome stay
The Lava Flow home was a truly one in a lifetime experience. The home was truly incredible and the immersion into the beautiful setting is fantastic. We sleep to the sound of regret but of nature that surrounds the home. The outdoor showers are the perfect end to a perfect day. The nearby beach is beyond compare. Get there early and I’ll experience paradise all by yourself. "

"Can't Wait to Come Back
This home is so strikingly unique and I feel privileged to have stayed there. The kitchen is very well equipped (unlike most rentals), the property feels isolated thanks to the large amount of greenery surrounding the house, and the indoor / outdoor living room was phenomenal. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs with you as the sounds of the jungle may wake you (the frogs are loud at night). We all had an incredible time and I would love to return someday. "

"Great experience even for locals
We live here on the Big Island and booked Hale Ohai for a staycation so we could explore new parts of the island. The home was perfectly clean and we felt as though we were living in a private treehouse, surrounded by beautiful landscaping. We enjoyed several afternoons just down the road at Kahena Beach and loved having this home as our retreat after a long day of exploring."
