New air conditioning has been added in all bedrooms for total guest comfort. We are constantly upgrading our home with guest comfort in mind! Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests.

Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area.

The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa.

The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home.

This Puna-area home on the Big Island's east side allows easy access to attractions such as black-sand Kehena Beach, Pohoiki (aka Isaac Hale) Beach Park, and the Na Ala Hele hiking trail. In nearby Pahoa town, guests will find excellent seafood, Italian, Mexican and Filipino restaurants, along with a 50's-style coffee shop and a natural foods market. 6. CANCELLATION POLICY (not applicable to Hale Kai Suites. See section f, below): To offer you the best services possible, we strictly adhere to our cancellation policy. Guest shall inform Agent in writing of Guest’s intention to cancel the reservation. (For reservations made through third parties, additional cancellation policies may apply.) The cancellation policy is as follows:
a. If Cancellation notice is received thirty or more days (30+) prior to the check-in date, a cancellation fee of $75.00 will be retained and the balance will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
b. If Cancellation notice is received less than thirty days but at least fifteen days (15-29) prior to the check-in date, fifty percent (50%) of the booking amount of rent and taxes will be forfeited. Half of the rent, tax, security deposit or damage waiver and any pre-collected cleaning fees will be refunded within 7 days from receipt of written cancellation.
c. NO REFUNDS if cancelled within 14 days of arrival (0 – 14). As a courtesy to our Guest, if Agent can rebook any portion of the canceled reservation, Guest will be refunded to the extent that Agent is able to re-book the Property.
d. This loss can be avoided if Travel Protection Insurance was purchased and the reason for cancelation is covered under the travel insurance policy. All reservation changes must be acknowledged in writing.
e. Owner/Agent Cancellation Policy: In the unlikely event that the Property becomes unavailable for any part of the tenancy for reasons beyond the control of the Agent, including but not limited to the sale of the property, Owner and/or Agent may cancel this Agreement and refund in full to the Guest all payments made. Agent will assist in procuring similar alternative accommodation should this situation arise. Guest agrees that any claims against Owner/Agent arising out of performance or
non-performance under this agreement shall be limited to a full refund of all consideration previously tendered by Guest.
f. Hale Kai Suites Cancellation Policy: The guest may cancel free of charge up to 14 days prior to arrival. The guest will be charged 50% of the total price if they cancel in the 14 days before arrival. No $75 cancellation fee charged on Hale Kai Suites cancellations.

"The Perfect Place To Relax!
If you are looking to relax, this place is it. The minute you enter Hilo Shangrila the weight of the world is lifted. We loved sitting by the pool and listening to the sounds of the ocean. The interior is very well kept and has everything you would need. We explored the entire island during our stay and loved coming “home” each afternoon to Hilo Shangrila. We encourage you to stay here!

"It has the potential to be a 5 star property.
The following maintenance issues were sent to the Concierge on Wednesday 7/19/2023: The door and window in the dining room were "frozen shut". (Confirmed by Gary) With no circulating air and no AC in that room we could not dine there comfortably.
The oven was very dirty and some pans underneath were
dirty/rusted and unusable (Confirmed by Gary with photos.)
Some knives and utensils had rust on them.
One of the microwave oven lights is out.
Gas from the grill lite once but wouldn’t light again. The second tank is rusted all over and does not look safe. The metal grill cover is loose and falling off. (No one came to assist in repairs). We had to fry our fish rather than grill it.
The hot water knob in the main shower is loose and ready to fall off.
The LG remote control for the AC in the master bedroom does not work.
We were expecting a 5 star experience but our experience was far less than that. It would be appropriate to receive a partial refund as we did not get what we paid for."

"Could have been better....
Stayed in this location 4-years ago, and things have definitely gone downhill. Maintenance of home doesn't seem to be a top priority. Cleaning fee, but when we arrived we found litter outside(used bandaid, straws, etc). Inside the toilet had obviously not been cleaned. Refrigerator died in the first 24-hrs after we arrived. We notified the management team, but it took more than 24-hrs for a replacement, causing the loss of food that we had purchased. We were reimbursed for the loss of food and given $18 for the inconvenience, but not reimbursed for having to eat out during this time. was of no use at all with the issue. Not the best way to start a vacation.

"Simply Paradise!
We had an amazing stay at Hilo Shangrila! The decor of the house definitely enhances your Island experience and the location is amazing! The ocean is literally in your backyard, making it easy to relax and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The pool was a great size, well maintained, as well as the hot tub. The house has all the amenities you could need, making it very easy for us to cook meals. Location is perfect for exploring Hilo side of the island, including Pahoa, Waipio Valley, and Volcano National Park. Will definitely stay again!"

From the moment we arrived we were amazed. The house has an unbelievable back yard and view. It is located around 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from Volcano National Park, and under 2 hours from Kona. The grounds are well kept and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We would go back 100 times over! It honestly kind of ruined our stay on Oahu after we left Big Island just because of how amazing the house and island were!"

"Cold Pool
We rented this property based on the location and the pool. The pool was so cold we did not swim at all. It was supposed to be partially solar heated but there were no solar heating equipment at all. We paid extra for a place with a pool but the pool was not usable. I would not come back.."

"LoVeD this Hale!
This house is awesome! We spent 4 relaxing days lounging and enjoying the incredible view. Dolphins, whales, turtles, and schools of fish along with amazing sunrises and crashing waves kept us in awe. BBQ-ing and eating outside, enjoying the pool and hot tub, and comfortable beds kept us happy. Very well stocked, clean, and BEAUTIFUL. Wish we could stay longer! Management company very helpful "

"Great spot, but hated the mattresses
Salt water vacations were great. They communicated well and helped us check in early. We loved the rental overall. There were 2 things that could be improved- no lights in the pool and terrible terrible mattresses on the beds. "

A completely amazing location to stay away from tourist crowds and relax. Fully ocean front on a short rocky cliff, the views in the morning with the cool breeze all day long were delightful. "We'll Be Back
We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this amazing home. The large lanai and pool near the ocean were where we spent most of our time. We have rented several homes on The Big Island, but this was the perfect combination of everything we needed and wanted. The manager of Salt Water Vacations texted us the first night to make sure we had arrived safely and to answer any questions that we had. The air conditioner in the second bedroom is quite loud so bring ear plugs for your best sleep."

"House on the cliff
Our vacation to this property was a bit tough. We sadly had a lot of problems. It started to feel more like I was doing a job with how much notifying to the property manager we were having to do. The grill was crumbling apart at the legs due to salt water deterioration. Which isn’t anyone’s fault however it nearly fell on my husband while we were grilling our food! Luckily he didn’t get burned but we have a small child and all in all it was a hazard. Not to mention accident waiting to happen! They definitely knew of the issue as there were man made stickers on it identifying warranty and other things! We had no hot water for over 24 hours or water pressure! The cable did not work the entire time of our stay which was hard with a young child and none stop rain. Nobody came to fix this issue either even after ample messages asking for assistance and updates. Come to find out after following ALL the instructions given the guests prior to us had disconnected cables so nothing could work! I was able to take pictures to show the property manager however nobody came to assist us. We at one point we’re thinking we would just leave and go rent a place at a resort but it just seemed like a hassle, waste of money!
The outdoor pool and view of ocean were great. House is okay, very dated and smelled of urine in the pantry. It’s hard to keep things dry in that area, I do understand that. However it was not a relaxing stay. Constant things not working from lights to the water issue. They did come fix the water however it still was not heating up or getting pressure. Then my husband found a hose outside just running! Started flooding the driveway and we were able to turn it off then everything seemed to work correctly! Again, was like a job. I feel bad writing this review, I wasn’t going to review the property because I’m not comfortable leaving a negative review but they kept emailing me to do so."

"A very special place for a special occasion.
Our 'ohana had such a special time while staying at Hilo Shangrila. There was plenty of space for all 6 of us and a newborn. The house was clean and well equipped and the property management was friendly, helpful and quick to respond. One of the highlights was sitting poolside with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise over the ocean and listening to the island wake up. My parents thanked me again and again for renting this house to honor their 50th wedding anniversary! "

"Great Stay Near Hilo

"Perfect House
I’ve been to the Big Island many times but never stayed on the Hilo side. We loved it and I wish we had stayed longer. Even though it was smack in the middle of the “rainy season”, we had only a few showers (one coolly thunderous) during our stay. We watched turtles in the waves all day long. The pool is fantastic, solar heated to a perfect temperature and the hot tub is also great. The kitchen is well-equipped and the beds are comfortable. The back screen door needs to be fixed, as well as the dishwasher top shelf. The information provided before we arrived was not update and contained some incorrect information. All in all, great place to be, great location. Would definitely rent it again."

"Mixed about this property
If and the property manager fix the issues, this is a good property at the rate I paid, but I understand the in-season rate is higher. I was charged the full amount at the time of reservation even though that was not what stated. The property needs minor items addressed that I made the property manager aware of, such as a mildew smell due to wet carpet from rain blowing in, top rack of dishwasher pulls out and falls, damaged blinds, door that does not latch, and other small items."
