"wonderful stay
Beautiful property. Very peaceful."
Aug 26, 2024 - Janet P., HONOLULU, HI

"Great location withgreat view
I am very happy with my stay at this location. Reason I gave it four stars was because the hot tub was promised but it wasn’t there, and also the shower wasn’t as clean as I would like. Otherwise the breakfast was superb and the view was amazing."
Aug 26, 2024 - Ellie R., Coventry, CT

"BNB with pool outside Hilo
A lovely stay just north of Hilo town. Great Ocean view. Daily breakfast left in fridge the day before. Lovely decor and linens. "
Aug 18, 2024 - , Christchurch, DOR

"Great Place, Terrible Service
The place itself was beautiful. The view from the room was spectacular and the breakfast in the morning was pretty good. Parking was challenging. It’s at an odd angle and I’m fairly certain a large SUV wouldn’t fit. The on island representative was awful. We weren’t able to get the hot tub started and she was of no help. She never even replied!"
May 19, 2024 - Amiya S., Houston, TX

"Seaside sunsets and surfers!
Clean and simple, this seaside b and b is in a quiet neighborhood, patios face the sunset, gardens and rooms are well maintained and the other guests were considerate and quiet. We were too busy enjoying waterfalls and hikes and botanical gardens to spend time by the lovely pool but enjoyed watching the surfers at the local beach next door from our patio. Fresh fruit and eggs for breakfast were a lovely touch. "

"Great location and views with a quaint room
The property and house were beautiful, pretty well maintained and easy to find. The location was great, near Hilo but not downtown, and with easy access to explore the north shore of the island. Great whale watching in the morning during season, right from the lanai. Heritage Room was clean, new and had all the amenities we needed (basic kitchen items for breakfast, fridge, beach towels). The breakfast set up worked nicely, with having all items available ahead of time in our room, and we could set out whatever needed a refill for the next day. Customer service through booking and on island was very courteous and helpful. Our only disappointment was that the hot tub was out of service and the pool looked like it needed some cleaning. As this was a main reason we chose this location, the managers were kind enough to offer us a bit of a discount on our booking."

"Ocean views, limited amenities
Oceanfront views from the property and nice breakfast with fresh fruits every morning. Properly could use an upgrade; some of the furniture was a bit worn. Very limited storage for clothes and small room with limited amenities. "

"bad experience

It was terrible overall. The walls of the rooms were very thin, if there was anything. The internet never worked and they didn't fix it despite our complaints. It should be prohibited to advertise that you have internet if it doesn't work. They only gave us breakfast for the first 2 days, the rest of the time we were hungry in the morning. Expensive and I don't recommend it at all!!!"

"Home Away From Home
The property was easy to get to and you felt so comfortable from the moment you arrived. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The pool area needs maintenance and a lot more attention. Lots of debris from the landscaping and that is okay, but it needs more frequent maintenance. We cleaned up the pool ourselves and enjoyed the swimming! The hot tub does not work and needs lots of maintenance! Otherwise, we enjoyed the view and watched whales right from the lanai! "

"Great experience
Overall we had a great experience, and the breakfast was really good. Sometimes it was a little bit noisy in the early morning."
Jan 14, 2024 - , San Gabriel, CA

"Early January stay
Beautiful quiet location save for one or two incoming morning flight. We enjoyed eating breakfast, bird watching and searching for whales."
Jan 12, 2024 - Neil S., Vashon, WA

"Konalini State of Mind
The view and location made this a perfect spot for us during our 4 day stay in Hilo. Waking up every morning to the sunrise and fresh fruit, muffins, eggs and kina coffee. Going to sleep every night with the sound of the waves. We couldn't have asked for a better experience."

"Oceanfront in Hilo Hale Kai Suites Heritage Room
Really enjoyed our stay here. Spent half of our vacation on Kona side and other half here. This rental is close to various waterfalls, botanical gardens and easy to get to the Volcano national park. "

"Beautiful place
We had a great time from the beginning of our stay! Check-in was easy, location great for many excursions to Hilo our the whole area. Good breakfast, great view and clean room."

"Best Location and Price
What peace to sit on the lanai with the lush blooming plants right above the crashing surf. Sunsets, rainbows, the undulating sea all right there. For a "do-it-yourself breakfast, the fruit plates, yogurt, muffins, boiled eggs and coffee were just right. The place is older, so of course shows that. A previous review said the floor turned a visitor's socks black; we found the same thing. I texted our contact in the company, and right away their lovely cleaning crew bought a new floor cleaning machine and washed our floors. Apparently the new floors are giving off a weird emission. We were in the Heritage room -- small with a comfy bed. Negatives? It's an older building, so there was some black mold in the shower (easy to avoid). Also a communication before we arrived said someone would contact us with directions for getting in, on our arrival day. No-one did. It turned out there was a second note they sent us that gave directions. We were worried driving there that we'd not get in -- but we did and it was a lovely holiday. "

"Hale Kai Hilo
Parking was not ideal. We rented a jeep and the parking spot was very small and hard to park in. There are a lot of stairs to go down and back up into the rooms. We were not able to get our luggage and had to go through are bags to grab a few items we needed prior to going into room. There was no air and it was very hot and humid in the room making it very hard to sleep. The ceiling fan did not move the air enough to make it comfortable."

"What a view!
We enjoyed our stay at the Hilo Hale Kai Suites Heritage Room very much! The landscaping on the property is gorgeous. Every morning we work up to a spectacular sunrise. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast of fresh fruit and muffins was replenished daily. The host kindly provided a coffee maker and good coffee. We didn't have to buy anything for our stay. All the essentials, and even snack bars, were provided. We used the pool and hot tub several times and had them to ourselves. Paradise! Will definitely try to stay here again when we visit family on the Big Island in the future."

"Hilo trip
Very small room ok for wife and me. Great view of ocean and harbor. Highlight was on several days watching a mother whale and young one breaching and frolicking in the ocean. Better than our whale watching trip in Kona. Also saw about 30 to 40 spinnner dolphins passing by our patio. However big drawback was the parking space. Very difficult to maneuver when all the spaces were full. If you are elderly, this would make me reconsider staying here."
Mar 27, 2023 - tom p., Livingston Manor, NY

"Quaint and Cutie
The space was great, small but very cozy and comfortable. Lots of rain but still managed to get around. The only complaint is the shower head is very low pressure. Also, the walk to town is along a busy highway. We opted to drive back and forth."
Mar 09, 2023 - Deana C., Courtenay, BC

"The Views!
We loved our stay in this beautiful place! The views of the ocean right from our patio can’t be beat! We enjoyed watching the surfers from the hot tub after a day of exploring the island. Breakfast each morning included fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, and homemade muffins. The only item I would add is orange juice. Another nice amenity to add would be a clothes dryer in the common room; that would make it possible to dry our pool towels and bathing suits. Sleeping with our patio door open brought in a fresh open breeze and the relaxing sounds of the waves."
Feb 22, 2023 - Lisa A., Midway, UT

"great hidden gem
Nice quiet location with beautiful views. Great breakfast every morning. Couple of things to note though: key didn't work; room wasn't marked so it was a bit difficult to find especially in the dark; parking was tight. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. "
Feb 18, 2023 - Belinda G., Livermore, CA

"A very cool little spot
We were very happy with our stay. The room was quant and the views were spectacular. A bit unfortunate that the hot tub didn't work but honestly that would have been the icing on the cake. The cake however was very good."
Nov 12, 2022 - Nicolas W., Mashpee, MA

"Lovely Stay
Location was great, in a little neighborhood off the main highway. Alot of stairs but it was a good workout.. but the views are amazing. Really enjoyed waking up to the sunsets. Only downside, the room could use a little TLC. The screendoor was broken.. but overall positive experience. "

"Great Location!
Loved my stay here. Very relaxing and soothing listening to the ocean waves. Really enjoyed spending time on the patio working. The Breakfast with fruit was delicious. I also enjoyed the pool. Everything was clean. Management responded quickly."

"Charming Place to Stay in Hilo
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Hilo at the Hale Kai Suites. The location was perfect for exploring north of Hilo or driving into downtown. One word that comes to mind on this property is CHARMING. There is a lot of charm at this property. The grounds, the vegetation, the flowers, the studio room, the pool. All of it was charming.

The only small change I would make is to enhance the continental breakfast. It was fine and did the job each morning, but a little more substance might help. For example, instead of yogurt in a container, how about a yogurt parfait with granola and berries added? Just a way to make the items presented a little extra.

Besides this small change, there is not much else that this CHARMING property needs. It was a real pleasure to stay here and listen to the ocean at night. If I am ever in Hilo again, Hale Kai will be hearing from me. "

"Amazing Views
We stayed for 3 nights in the Heritage Room. The room was nice and had everything we needed. They even provided several breakfast items each morning, including some fabulous cake! The pool was fantastic and again the views were awesome! The management company texted us and keep great communication throughout. The screen on the sliding glass door needed to be replaced as it was torn. I thought it would be hard to sleep with no A/C, but there was a ceiling fan and another fan kept us cool, we also keep the sliding glass door open and heard ocean waves all night! Hilo area was great, we rented snorkel equipment from Hilo Ocean Adventures, great people, and went to snorkel in local parks saw some great sea life including huge (Property Management)s. Would rent again for sure! Thank you!"
Oct 04, 2022 - Tracey C., KANSAS CITY, MO

"Magical!
What a perfect spot! The first thing that welcomes you are the beautiful intentional gardens that lead you through the arch and down the stairs, and then open up to the vista of the pool lanai with the eastern ocean view. We sat in the hot tub at sunset and watched to boats go by. So much old Hawaii romance at this place. It really has soul! We sat in the hot tub again at sunrise, and watched the sun come up with the boats leaving Hilo harbor. To the right, you can watch the surfers at the little beach. Every day, we had fresh fruit and banana bread. So thoughtful. The rooms are clean, and have everything you need! A very short and easy drive into the great things of Hilo!"
Sep 24, 2022 - Kathleen L., Austin, TX

"Great views, loads of steps and difficult parking
Beautiful view from the lanai. Room was clean and staff friendly and helful. Breakfast was an abundant fruit plate, sweet bread slices, hard boiled egss. There was also coffee and yogurt, all self serve. Be aware no AC, which I was aware of. However there are loads of steps to haul your luggage to your room and back and parking is very tight and difficult on a very steep driveway. As much as we enjoyed the view will not return do to steps and parking."
Jun 22, 2022 - Wendy J., Simi Valley, CA

"Lovely ocean getaway
Shawna was great coordinating our last minute stay. Great spot, chill vibe my daughter said. Watched a local band and loved their food from the cafe."
Jun 07, 2022 - Crysta K., Los Altos, CA

"Hilo Adventure
We arrived in Hilo Feb 5th after spending 2 weeks on Maui, and 1 week in Kona. The B&B offered a front row seat to the daily activities of the humpback whales, and the surfers. Enjoyed our morning breakfast on the Lanai watching the sunrise and the whales. While there, we explored all the waterfalls and parks along the east coast of the Island, and also hiked through the Volcano National Park. Our accommodations were perfect for us, excellent waterfront view, great location and very well kept and clean. "

"Great view in Hilo
Beautiful view. Good location. Needs maintenance and thorough cleaning.hot tub not working. Screen door ripped and off track.
Heritage room is very small. Tight parking on a hill made getting in and out of car and driveway challenging as well as packing. Nice breakfast on patio overlooking ocean. Noisy roosters next door. Getting to room with luggage is challenging. "
Feb 06, 2022 - , Annapolis, Maryland

"Lovely
We had a great stay. A beautiful ocean view, clearances room,, decent breakfast and a perfect location.
Our only problem was lack of privacy. Our neighbors sat outside zooming with loud voices. However I don’t know how to fix this unless the proprietor stops renting the middle room. "
Jan 19, 2022 - , Novato, CA

"No Pampering Here
The room was a bit austere, but the bathroom was roomy as was the shower stall. Breakfast is DIY. On the coffee cart was instant cereal, coffee/tea, and granola bars. In the refrigerator were hardboiled eggs, milk, yogurt and fruit. Bread was provided when requested. The hot tub was not working which was unfortunate as the evenings were cool. I could hear the lovely sound of the surf. The "common room" was not set up for guests to meet, but was a cleaning supplies room. Screen door to the common room was broken. Otherwise, the grounds were very pretty and the steps were well marked. The pool was very pretty but we didn't use it. We generally like a more pampered experience when we stay at a B&B. Since there was no maid service, we swept the room ourselves after breakfast on day 2. There were no reading lights over the chairs, one of which had deteriorating caning. The table for preparing and eating breakfast was very small. We had to enter the room the first evening with a flashlight as the light switch near the door was for a switched outlet and the attached light was turned off. Same with the switch in the common room. We were able to remedy this by leaving on the lights for these outlets. Bathroom lightswitches were not accessible at the entry doorway."

"Relaxing place to stay
Loved the Hilo area. The B&B is right by the small town, right on the ocean and has a nice pool and hot tub on site. They stock your room with breakfast food and coffee. Only drawback is no AC. We did not know that when we went, but we adjusted and loved the place totally. We will go back. It's quiet. Nell, the gal who works there, is very nice and very helpful. Great price for the area."
Oct 12, 2021 - Melanie B., Houston, TX

"A disappointing stay in Hilo
My reservation for three nights was made and confirmed in May with a note that my credit card would be charged. For this three week trip covering three islands I had coordinated five hotels. The B&B was sold but my reservation was to be turned over to the new owners. Less than a month before the stay I was told by a manager I had no reservation. She said it was not her fault so she was letting us use another room. She said it was decent size with a dresser and shelves for storage. It did not, and was so small with little wall space, sliding doors next to the bed and an exit door. I nearly broke my toe, after tripping on a suitcase on the floor. I don’t believe this person really knew what she was talking about which makes me wonder who originally dropped the ball. Food left in the refrigerator for breakfast was unappetizing and the room was so damp and not cleaned. (Difficult to do with bags and luggage on the floor)."

"Spectacular Location and Amazing Beauty
This place was great. It was up on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The gardens were beautiful. I loved the pool overlooking the ocean it was such a great place to relax. We stayed in the heritage room that had a sliding glass door to the lanai with a table and two chairs to relax. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of room for two people. The breakfast was simple but delicious. Would have been nice if the room had a second portable fan as it did get a bit warm once the slider was locked for the night. "

"Peace and Sunshine
I loved my stay. It was so peaceful and quiet. I woke up to the sunrise every morning. Hawaii is magical. Being on the water was very healing for me. All the flowers and plants on the property added to the feeling of peace and magic. I will definitely stay again when I’m back in the area. Thank you! "
