Puerto Penasco Centro - Beach Information - Fun Things to Do - Tips

Just 62 miles over the Mexican border, along the northern shore of the Gulf of California, is Puerto Penasco. Also known as Rocky Point, this resort city in the Sonora Desert is poised to become one of the most popular vacation spots in Northern Mexico. The recent opening of the Sea of Cortez International Airport makes it easy to travel to and from the lovely Puerto Penasco beach houses, although once you get there you will never want to leave.
The name Rocky Point underscores a unique feature of the region. There is a 15-mile rocky reef submerged along the bay, which is exposed when the tide goes out. This creates tidepools that residents of Puerto Penasco love to explore. You can visit the tidepools at Las Conchas Beach and discover a wide variety of shells and sea life, from sand dollars to baby octopi.
Puerto Penasco Beach, Mexico
Rocky Point isn't all rocky, though. There are many sandy beaches here where you can enjoy your time on the sand, as well as in the water. Sandy Beach is one of the most popular locations in Puerto Penasco. The waters are mild and the beach is gently sloped, making this a perfect place for swimming and snorkeling. There are lots of food and souvenir vendors here, too, so there is always something new to enjoy. If you enjoy a bustling atmosphere with lots of amenities, Sandy Beach is the place for you. Another hot spot, especially during spring break, is El Mirador Beach, which always feels like a party. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Playa Encanto, which offers a more natural and private beach experience with a mellow and quiet atmosphere. No matter what your beach preference, you can find a Puerto Penasco beach house in a location that suits your needs.
Beach on Puerto Penasco, Mexico North of Puerto Penasco beach houses is the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, which has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There are two distinct parts to this reserve; in the west, the Gran Altar Desert is an ever-changing landscape of dunes (called "active dunes") that can reach up to 200 meters high. The east side is El Pinacate, one of the driest places on Earth. The landscape here is almost unearthly, which is why Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin used this area to prepare themselves for landing on the moon! Here, you'll find ancient eroded volcanoes, petrified lava flows, and ten gigantic craters. The wildlife in the reserve is just as amazing as the land; pronghorn antelope, pumas, Gila monsters, and desert tortoises all call this region home.
When you choose a Puerto Penasco beach house, you are signing up for endless adventure.
