History
Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda was the first European explorer to arrive on Corpus Christi's sunny shores, and he named it for the "Body of Christ" religious feast day which was to occur the same day. The formal settlement of Corpus Christi was not until 1839, at which point it officially became part of the Republic of Texas. Rumors of treasure abound in Corpus Christi, thanks to its abundant dunes and miles of relatively untouched marsh. In fact, three Spanish treasure galleons famously wrecked offshore in 1554, and much of their treasure is still unaccounted for.
